Cliff Mass Weather Blog: Major Snow Event →
“The bottom line is that there is a serious threat on Wednesday of 8-15 inches of snow over the region, with a minimal turn over to rain. The biggest snowstorm in years. Anyway, before anyone goes out and buys a snowblower, lets see what tonight’s runs show. If they continue this trend then Slushmageddon might be replaced by Snowmageddon. In almost any conceivable case, Wednesday...

My Contribution to the Seattle Police Department
One day into my vacation and I already have a new gig designing for the Seattle Police Department. Or…something. Also, it’s my first showing on the Slog. (Note to haters: I’m not anti-cop, just anti-Diaz and anti-systemic misconduct.)

Can anyone actually read my blog in this layout?
Because I can’t. As much as I like it, most of the entries are illegible and images sometimes break. Which…isn’t great for a designer.
One more item on the To Do list!

It Takes A Lot Of Work To Fail Big Time!…(or, Is... →
Love seeing old collateral like this. Ford Motor Company’s material to go along with the ill-fated Edsel, from circa 1957.
Also worth noting: deft use of serif body copy, sans serif headlines/subheads, and didone page headings. There might be a little too much variety on the pages, but I like it.

Trade Gothic Next →
Initially I was excited to see a new family of Trade Gothic, but after seeing this specimen I’m not so sure. Trade Gothic Next is a very attractive typeface, and I appreciate the addition of the Heavy weight. New kerning pais are nice. I don’t like what they’ve done with the Bold Condensed G, though—the vertical strokes of the original were what made the typeface. Trade Gothic...

Thoughts on "The New Gambit" →
scottrafferty:
Paul Carr, formerly of TechCrunch, has started his own publishing platform named Not Safe For Work Corporation. His inaugural effort called The New Gambit, which he describes as “the Economist as written by the Daily Show,” will be a weekly[?] paid subscription publication that will go…

Designing for the Kindle (Part 1)
I got a Kindle yesterday (the base-level $79 model) and so far I’m impressed. After playing with it for a few days or a week, I’ll write up more of my thoughts here.
I have discovered a couple things about designing for the Kindle, though. First, the best dimensions for a PDF (because I haven’t played around with any other formats) are 3.5” by 4.5”. I may refine...

NASA's Two Logos: The Worm and the Meatball -... →
Back in 1974, after the success of the Mercury and Apollo programs, but before the initiation of the Shuttle Program, NASA was convinced by the National Endowment for the Arts to participate in its “Federal Graphics Improvement Program,” and do what many companies these days do to revive their image: undergo a redesign.
